This morning, those of us at the ALA Council/Executive Board/Membership Information Session here in Boston participated in a strategic planning activity led by Paul Meyer of Tecker Consultants.
Questions:
- How can we constantly build on our strengths?
- How can we build up to ameliorate weaknesses?
- How do we distinguish ourselves from others?
How long is the plan for? This is an ongoing process for an organization that includes milestones. We have 5-year goals, 3-5 year objectives, one to two year strategies, and a vision for the future. There are multiple planning horizons. What's most important is that it's an ongoing process.
We begin with core ideology and organizational values. There is an envisioned future and 3-5 year goals.
Small group activity: We moved into small groups and jointly filled out one worksheet to hand in. We discussed and commented on the ten-year planning horizon, then goals and objectives.
